The End essays
The End essays While feminisms primary emphasis has historically been on womens role in the world, and the need for drastic change in our movement toward equality, feminism today does not present such a simple and unified message. Feminist scholars, vary drastically in the arguments they make about feminism from to what extent it is prevalent, what its causes are and what should be studied and emphasized to improve women as a group within society. But because women are such a broad group as whole, individual experiences of sex, race and class ultimately affects particular feminist scholars in their area of study. For while Melanie Maltry and Kristin Tuckers article Female Fem(me)ininities: New Articulations in Queer Gender Identities and Subversion focuses on the restricted historical endorsement and political legitimization of the masculinized lesbian, Audre Lordes article Age, Race, Class and Sex: Women Redefining Difference focuses on the roles certain characteristics in life place on different iating womens experiences and needs. Meanwhile Iris Marion Youngs article Throwing Like a Girl centers on feminine body behavior and it implications. This paper will first look at these arguments individually, and will then compare and contrast the articles in order to assess the to what extent each authors argument are in line with the broad and generalized goal of feminist; to create a society in which women are equal to men. Through analysis this paper will ultimately show that authors personal background and biases seem to dominate their study, rather than their commonality as women. In their article, Melanie Maltry and Kristin Tucker examine the roles femme and butch lesbians have within their community, and how femme lesbians have historically been ignored both by the gay community and the straight community. It is important to note that this article was written in...

Archimedes Profile - About the Ancient Mathematician
Archimedes Profile - About the Ancient Mathematician Name: ArchimedesPlace of Birth: Syracuse, SicilyFather: PhidiasDates: c.287-c.212 B.C.Main Occupation: Mathematician/ScientistThe Manner of Death: Probably killed by a Roman soldier in the aftermath of the Roman siege of Syracuse. Famous Quote Give me a lever long enough and a place to stand, and I will move the world.- Archimedes Life of Archimedes: Archimedes, a mathematician, and scientist who determined the exact value of pi, is also known for his strategic role in the ancient war and the development of military techniques. First the Carthaginians, then the Romans besieged Syracuse, Sicily, the birthplace of Archimedes. While in the end Rome won and killed him (during the second Punic War, probably in 212 at the end of the Roman Siege of Syracuse), Archimedes put up a good, almost single-handed defense of his homeland. First, he invented an engine that threw stones at the enemy, then he used glass to set the Roman ships on fire well, at least according to legend. After he was killed, the regret-filled Romans had him buried with honor. Education of Archimedes: Archimedes probably traveled to Alexandria, Egypt, home of the famous library, to study mathematics with the successors of Euclid. Some of Archimedes Accomplishments: The name Archimedes is connected to a pumping device now known as a Archimedes Screw, which he may have seen in operation in Egypt. He described the principles behind the pulley, fulcrum andlever. Eureka!: The word eureka comes from the story that when Archimedes figured out a way to determine whether the king (Hiero II of Syracuse), a possible relative, had been duped, by measuring the buoyancy of the kings supposedly solid gold crown in water, he became very excited and exclaimed the Greek (Archimedes native language) for I have found it: Eureka. Here is the relevant passage from a public domain translation of the passage from Vitruvius who wrote two centuries later: ââ¬â¹But a report having been circulated, that some of the gold had been abstracted, and that the deficiency thus caused had been supplied with silver, Hiero was indignant at the fraud, and, unacquainted with the method by which the theft might be detected, requested Archimedes would undertake to give it his attention. Charged with this commission, he by chance went to a bath, and being in the vessel, perceived that, as his body became immersed, the water ran out of the vessel. Whence, catching at the method to be adopted for the solution of the proposition, he immediately followed it up, leapt out of the vessel in joy, and, returning home naked, cried out with a loud voice that he had found that of which he was in search, for he continued exclaiming, in Greek, à µÃ¡ ½â¢Ã à ·Ã ºÃ ± [heà ºrÃâka] (I have found it out). - Vitruvius The Archimedes Palimpsest: A medieval prayerbook contains at least 7 of Archimedes treatises: Equilibrium of Planes,Spiral Lines,The Measurement of the Circle,Sphere and Cylinder,On Floating Bodies,The Method of Mechanical Theorems, andStomachion. The parchment still contains the writing, but a scribe re-used the material as a palimpsest. See William Noel Revealing the Lost Codex of Archimedes video. Ancient Sources on the Weapons of Archimedes: Polybius Histories 8.2.3.2-8.4Livy AUC 24:34Plutarch Life of Marcellus 14:7 And yet even Archimedes, who was a kinsman and friend of King Hiero, wrote to him that with any given force it was possible to move any given weight; and emboldened, as we are told, by the strength of his demonstration, he declared that, if there were another world, and he could go to it, he could move this. 8 Hiero was astonished, and begged him to put his proposition into execution, and show him some great weight moved by a slight force. Archimedes therefore fixed upon a three-masted merchantman of the royal fleet, which had been dragged ashore by the great labours of many men, and after putting on board many passengers and the customary freight, he seated himself at a distance from her, and without any great effort, but quietly setting in motion with his hand a system of compound pulleys, drew her towards him smoothly and evenly, as though she were gliding through the water. 9 Amazed at this, then, and com prehending the power of his art, the king persuaded Archimedes to prepare for him offensive and defensive engines to be used in every kind of siege warfare. These he had never used himself, because he spent the greater part of his life in freedom from war and amid the festal rites of peace; but at the present time his apparatus stood the Syracusans in good stead, and, with the apparatus, its fabricator. Strategic Management - Essay Example Marketing, customer service and customer relationship management, human resource management, and operations are the largest competencies of the firm associated with the value chain that allows Apple to make such a positive impression with desired customer target segments across the world. This report conducts a critical evaluation of Apple using three distinct models: Porterââ¬â¢s Generic Strategies, the McKinsey 7-S Framework and Johnsonââ¬â¢s Culture Web as a means of understanding what drives considerable market success from the perspective of strategic management competency and the achievement of competitive advantage. The Generic Strategies model is illustrative of how a firm is able to attain competitive advantages in its established markets. As shown by the model, there are three strategies available to firms, including cost leadership, differentiation, or a focus strategy. When a company is pursuing the most viable method to achieve competitive advantage, the firm selects which strategy is achievable and feasible based on tangible resources, internal human capital, market conditions, procurement capabilities and operational capacity (Allen, Helms, Takeda and White 2007; Miller 1992). A business can significantly improve its performance by selecting one of these generic strategies which will underpin the corporate level strategy development and its business-level strategies that will better serve the business for competitive advantage. If a firm is unable to decide on one of these three generic strategies, it poses a risk of being stuck in the middle, which succeeds in confusing important custo mer segments and creates an uncertain market-based identity for the company (Bordean, Borza, Nistor and Mitra 2010). Apple, in its pursuit of achieving competitive advantage, has adopted a differentiation strategy that emphasises product uniqueness when targeting a broader mass market internationally. Apple has worked diligently in positioning its business

Art Research paper Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words
Art Research paper - Essay Example revolutionized the Western art scene, while Middle-Eastern cultures denounced it as blasphemy. With the advent of Christianity, the nude form was suppressed and it was not until the Renaissance, when artists looked to antiquity for inspiration, that the nude form came in vogue once again. The period between the 15th -17th century saw some of the most renowned works of nudes come into being. Kenneth Clark2 (1956) whose seminal work on the female nude gave way to much animated discussion on this forgotten topic, credits the Renaissance with giving an impetus to this form, saying ââ¬Å"In the greatest age of painting, the nude inspired the greatest workâ⬠. The nude female form continues to inspire artists and art lovers to this day and many ground breaking studies reveal the various nuances of female depiction, its metamorphosis over the ages and the reaction it evokes, ranging from awe to a total denial of its worth as a subject. The words nude and naked are often interchanged for each other, but the difference in their meaning is so wide that the word nude invariably evokes the image of a person without clothes but it has an aesthetic ring to it. Naked on the other hand can mean intolerance and a subsequent discarding of clothes or even to a cult of nudists who exhort people to give up clothing. To put forth the idea more clearly, we can use Kenneth Clarkââ¬â¢s definition of the terms, where he says ââ¬Å"To be naked is to be deprived of our clothes, andâ⬠¦. the embarrassmentâ⬠¦in that condition. The word nude carries â⬠¦no uncomfortable overtoneâ⬠¦it projectsâ⬠¦a balanced, prosperous, and confident body: the body re-formed.â⬠The author has delineated the female nude in conformity with religious, cultural and philosophic tenets of classical and modern Western society. Clarkââ¬â¢s theories are the benchmark for any argument for or against the female nude, while John Bergerâ⠬â¢s study of the relation between the work of art and the person

sleep rem :: essays research papers
States of Consciousness Consciousness à à à à à à à à à à In 1960 a man named W. Dement conducted a series of studies relating to sleep. His main goal was to understand and learn about the effects of dream deprivation. His tactics would soon be very useful in the quest of answering some very complex questions. à à à à à He started out with the idea of observing infants while they were asleep, without realizing that he couldnââ¬â¢t get no verbal feed back from a new born. He then decided to choose 20 random adults to be his ginnea pigs. He would then end up putting these 20 individuals through a series of test and trials. Dement did this by a series of awakenings through the course of sleep. He would monitor his subjects in another room by hooking up electronic devices to the patients muscles located around their eyes. The purpose of the electronic devices was to be able to wake up the subjects in two different periods. One being eye movement and the other no eye movement. He would then wake them up and ask if they could remember their dream. à à à à à According to Dement 74% of the 27 awakenings during the periods of sleep accompanied by eye movement, could remember detailed visual dreams. The other 26% reported ââ¬Å"the feeling of having dreamed,â⬠but they could no recall the content in detail. During periods of no eye movement, there were 23 awakenings of which 82% did not remember dreaming and 4 of them said that they might have been dreaming but were not for sure. While his study progressed each subject would have to be awakened more frequently because of the bodies way of REM-rebound. Your body needs sleep and when it is denied sleep it tries to make up for lost sleep. à à à à à Today we know that there are four different stages of sleep. One being the lightest and four being the deepest. At the time, Dement had no idea that he was messing with oneââ¬â¢s circadian rhythm. The circadian rhythm is like the bodyââ¬â¢s clock in which it sends messages to your brain to let you know what your body needs. For instance if your body needs sleep you will then start to feel tired. à à à à à The results could be used to improve interrogation tactics by utilizing dream, or sleep, deprivation. Dement did this by depriving his subjects of sleep. The bodyââ¬â¢s continued effort to make of for lost REM sleep, can force someone to say, or do, something that they normally would not have done.

Force Practice Questions
A hockey stick exerts an average force of 39N on a 0. 2kg hockey puck over a displacement of 0. 22m. if the hockey puck started from rest, what is the final velocity of the puck? Assume no friction. Your physics teacher walking with the aid of a cane approaches a skateboard of 3. 5 kg lying on the side walk. Pushing with an angle of 60 degree down from the horizontal with his cane, he applies a force of 115N, which is enough to toll the skateboard out of his way. Calculate the initial accelerationA solo arctic adventurer pulls a string of two toboggans of supplies across level, snowy ground. The toboggans have masses of 95kg and 55kg. Appling a force of 165N causes the toboggans to accelerate at 0. 61m/s2. Find the tension in the rope attached to the second toboggan. A 75kg man is standing on a scale in an elevator when the elevator begins to descend with an acceleration of0. 66 m/s2. What is the reading on the scale while elevator is accelerating? A 32 kg baby is practising climbing skills on a climbing wall, while being belayed by her parent. The child loses her grip and dangles from the rope. When the parent starts lowing the child, the tension in the rope is 253N. Find the acceleration of the child when she is first being lowered. The lighter person on an Atwood machine is 45kg. If the tension in the rope is 512N, what is the mass of the second person? What is the acceleration of the two people? A 40g glider on an air track is connected to a suspended 25g mass by a string passing over a frictionless pulley. When the mass is released, how long will it take the glider to travel the 0. 5 m to the other end of the track. Starting from rest, Grace bikes down the starting ramp at a professional biking track. If the ramp has the minimum legal dimensions (1. 5m high and 12m long), find the acceleration when coefficient of friction is 0. 11 Lyn flick a 5. 5g coin up a smooth board propped at an angle of 25 degree to the floor. If the initial velocity of the coin is 2 . 3m/s up the board and the coefficient of kinetic friction between the coin and the board is 0. 4, how far does the coin travel before stopping?

How to Pass a College Class
Whether youre about to start college, about to restart college, or just want to up your game a bit, its important to get back to the basics: doing well in your classes is critical for your success. And while knowing how to pass a college class seems so simple at first, being able to follow through over the course of a semester can often become challenging. How to Pass a College Course In essence, there are several key things all college students need to knowà ââ¬âà and doà ââ¬âà if they want to pass their classes. Attend Class Go to class! It can be all too easy to not go to class regularly, especially if your professor doesnt take attendance. And it can be all too easy to sleep in or attend other events instead. Over time, however, low attendance can turn into a major problem. Youll miss discussing and learning about important material, of course, but youll also miss other key elements. These elements include the moment your professor mentions that something is going to be on an upcoming exam, the moment the light bulb finally goes off in your own brain because of something another student said, the moment you got the idea for your final paper. Engage With the Material Theres more to a class than just the few hours it meets each week. Do the assigned reading. Watch the assigned films. Think about what youre learning and how it can apply to all kinds of things outside of the classroom. How is what youre learning important in the bigger picture of your life? Of the universe? Talk to Your Peers Engage with the students. Your classmates can be one of the best resources for your learning experience. Whether youre in a study group or just connect with one student in particular, engaging with your fellow students can deepen your understanding of the course material and help shift your perspective. Talk to Your Professor Engage with the professor. Office hours are like a gift your professor gives you each semester. Use them! Whether you have a question about what was covered in class, want feedback on a paper or project youre working on, or just want to talk to your professor about something kinda-sorta-maybe related to the class, office hours are the place to do it. Additionally, if your professor sees youve been giving it your all at the end of the semester, he or she might be more inclined to give you the benefit of the doubt if youre grade is on the border. Manage Your Time Plan in advance for papers and tests. Time management in college is not easyà ââ¬âà at all. And managing multiple projects, assignments, and deadlines can be one of the biggest challenges you face. Can you pull an all-nighter? Probably. But you might get sick, your computer might crash, you might not finish in time, and you definitely wont turn in your best work. Plan in advance for papers and exams so that you can work on them slowly, deliberately, and well. Keep up With Your Work Stay on top of your assignments as often as possible. Staying on top of your reading and other assignmentsà ââ¬âà like language lab hoursà ââ¬âà is important, too. Will it always be possible? Probably not. But staying on top of your academic to-do list is a major factor in making sure that youre understanding the material and, consequently, that youll likely pass the class. Remember to Relax Relax from time to time. Even though your brain is technically an organ, it does operate like a muscle in many ways. If you keep doing the same motions over and over, youre likely to sabotage your own chances for success. You cant study all the time, and even if you could, your efforts would quickly become ineffective. Take a break. Go for a walk. Relax for a few minutes. Take an afternoon or even an entire day off. Let yourself relax and enjoy your college life so that you have the mental energy you need for your academic obligationsà ââ¬âà and so that you can have some fun along the way, too. Set Goals Set goals about what you want to learn and experience. Passing a class is more than just getting a certain grade. What do you want to learn? What do you want to experience? What skills do you want to gain? Getting a C in your everyone-else-failed, nearly-impossible-to-pass statistics class, for example, might feel like more of a victory than the A you earned with barely any effort in your creative writing course. While grades are important, they arent the be-all, end-all of your college experience. You need to pass your classes, of course, but you also need to be mindful of what you want to learn and experience along the way.
